SOPHIE PENSTONE ART GALLERY
After graduating in 1999 with a 2:1 Ba (Hons)
in General Illustration, and some time out travelling, I relocated to Cornwall
in an attempt to integrate myself into the thriving Cornish art scene whilst
surrounding myself with an abundance of inspiration from the dramatic coast to
the beautiful gardens and woodlands.
Although painting from an early age it was only at this point that I discovered
a natural flair and love of watercolours. I found I was able to express a
variety of moods and atmospheric subtleties in light and intensity of colour
through their transparency and natural flow. Whilst making considered decisions
about composition, I allow the paint to have control on the paper and be
spontaneous whilst retaining instinct and colour knowledge. This interaction is
integral to my loose, distinct and individual vibrant style. Strong, bold and
intense colours are always important in my work and I am never afraid to use
them whether working in watercolours, acrylics or (for me) newly discovered
acrylic inks.
I continue to develop my painting further by exploring different compositions
and view points and considering new painting surfaces, textures and colour
combinations, a method that I hope will ensure I maintain my drive and pure
passion for the process of painting itself for a lifetime.
