BEX FEY ART GALLERY
Bex studied fine art at Northampton University,
graduating with a First Class Honours degree in 2002. She has since created
numerous art works varying in both size, colour and medium. The principle of her
work is experimentation - using a variety of materials ranging from acrylic
paint to wax and metals. She explores the materials by manipulating their
structure, mark making and applying heat to the surface. These are then applied
to the canvas in layers - often a piece will contain 3 to 4 layers of assorted
materials. Texture is also integral to her work. She achieves this by combining
the layers, textured surfaces and rapid setting substances. The paintings follow
a theme of a 'strip' of activity, which is accompanied by blank canvas either
side. This creates a sense of harmony, as the strip can often be a frenzy of
colour and texture, which is then merged into the frame of the calming, blank
canvas.
Her interest in layers and texture stems from her time at art college in 1999.
As part of a project labelled 'sequences' she studied the effects of time and
the process of creating fossils - comprised of layers and layers of matter. Her
interest in this area grew and she developed a fascination with the mystery of
'what lies beneath' and the notion of items being trapped between layers,
partially concealed and allowing the viewer to become inquisitive, and look
closer at the work.
